Gilfedder Designs - Uist Machair Flowers

Michael Felix Gilfedder

Michael studied at Glasgow School of Art, and taught in Glasgow for five years before coming to  South Uist in 1977 where he taught art in five schools from Eriskay to Benbecula. He now teaches part time and is developing his Gilfedder Designs from his home in Gerinish.
Since art school, where he studied stained glass and murals, he has had a love of painting religious icons, being  attracted by the use of  deep mystical colour  and gold leaf as well as the subject matter. Over the years there have been icons commissioned for the local churches as well as individual clients from all over Britain. He has a great interest in the philosophy and theology of art which comes from his Classical - Judaic - Christian formation and tradition, and whatever he is painting, be it  an icon, a  portrait or the Uist machair landscape in all its fine greenery and jewelled flowers, this tradition  is the inspiration behind the painting, reflecting the light and beauty of creation.

Uist Machair Flowers

During the spring and summer the flat land on the west side of the Uists called the machair, is covered in a blanket of wild flowers . It is a beautiful sight. This series of paintings are a celebration of this machair land, and I have constructed the paintings in such a way as to bring to the fore the light and jewelled effect of the flowers against the minty greens. I have also used calligraphy with some colour which complements the paintings as well as indicating the general geographical area of the painting. The mediums used are acrylic, watercolour and indian ink. In some of the paintings there is a speckled effect using gold leaf.
