It is inspired by Saint John Paul's 'Man and Woman He Created Them. A Theology of the Body'. It is also about the questions within the title of Gauguin's painting called 'Where Do We Come From?' 'What Are We?' 'Where Are We Going?'. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">We still need to ask these questions in a materialistic and scientific world that seems trapped in space. Whilst reading Theology of the Body, I realised the paintings I had produced over the years were the ideal accompaniment to the anthropology within Saint John Paul's work, especially the aspects of mystical and poetic theology. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Crucial to this project was working with my good friend Heather Macdonald, whose encouragement and skills as a graphic designer resulted in helping to give the book its visual beauty.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://amzn.eu/hFn2YuX" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: times;">Purchase a copy of this book from Amazon now.</span></a></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 238); color: #0000ee; font-family: times; font-size: medium;"><u><br /></u></span></p><p style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></p><p></p><br /><p></p>Fraochiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00722818662026694019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4086475066576832781.post-66519469359433716382019-06-12T22:39:00.009+01:002022-04-13T21:23:35.724+01:00Icons of Saints <table>

Trueburn stove, South Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. This stove was in use within the island crofts particularly during the 1950's. The artist lived in this croft house in Locheynort when he arrived in 1977 to teach art on South Uist. There was no electricity in Locheynort, so the painting was made under the light of the pleasant sounding Tilley lamp hanging from a beam. The stove is burning peat from the bog, which is in front of the house, and the oven was used for drying out wet shoes. The kettle was in constant use as was the old iron heating up on the stove. Giglée print on water colour paper. A2 size with white border.

Truburn Stove is a favorite print, from small 4 x 6 inch prints to A2 size and even a large scale print for a kitchen wall.<br />
<br />

<br />
How must Mary have felt when she encountered the Angel Gabriel and was asked to allow the Holy Spirit to overshadow her and thus conceive the Christ Child?<br />
<br />
Saint Augustine in his Sermons says about Mary:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“When the angel had spoken, she, filled with faith and conceiving Christ first in her mind before she did so in her womb, replied:<br />
‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word’.”<br />
(Sermon 215)</blockquote>
<div>
In another sermon on the Nativity, he makes the same contrast between Mary’s conceiving the Eternal Word in her mind through faith and conceiving him in her womb. It works better in Latin:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Angelus nuntiat,<br />
Virgo audit, credit et concepit:<br />
Fides in mente,<br />
Christus in Ventre.</blockquote>
(The Angel announces : the Virgin hears, believes and conceives: faith in her mind, Christ in her womb)<br />
<br />
Saint Augustine also makes the obvious link with us when he says: The mother carried him in her womb, but we do so in our heart – or mind, through faith, as she first did. Therefore <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
‘Blessed is she who believed…’ (Luke 1: 45) and<br />
“Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.’ (Luke 8: 19-21).</blockquote>
It is a rich theme and focuses our attention on the centrality of a contemplative faith which <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“hearing the Word, holds it fast in an honest and good heart, and brings forth fruit with patience.” (Luke 8: 15)</blockquote>
The great mystical film "2001 : A Space Odyssey" ends with beautiful and dramatic images of the unborn child, making us think about where we came from and where we are going. Ever since seeing the film I have been fascinated by the image of the unborn child made ever clearer by new technologies. After art school I experimented in a new kind of "Madonna and Child" icon, trying to show the Christ child in Mary's womb. I failed. The torso of the Madonna looked as if it had been opened up by a surgeon. <br />
<br />
I first saw stoney landscape and stone wall formations in the west of Ireland, but only became familiar with them when I came to live and work in South Uist. The east side of the islands are covered in a stoney landscape, with many old buildings with stone formations. From this came the idea of building up a painting of the Madonna in a stone-like formation and placing the images on individual stones. It worked.<br />
<br />
In the image of the "Blue Madonna" I used the blue colours in order to give it a mystical look. The main formation is in the magnified shape of a woman's ovum where the egg of life is produced. To the left there are spirals which symbolise God the Father, Christ is in the womb-stone, and to the right is the dove of the Holy Spirit. The hand and face of the Madonna caress and contemplate the Christ child.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Dream of Gerontius was written by Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman in 1865. It is a dramatic poem which portrays the death of an old man and what happens to his soul as he enters into eternity and the state of Purgatory. Newman discovered much about the teaching of Purgatory from the Fathers of the Catholic Church when he was writing his "Essay on development of Doctrine". The musician and composer Edward Elgar began work on the "Dream of Gerontius" in 1900. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The painting of the Dream of Gerontius was commissioned by the Pitt-Payne family from Alesbury in 2003, and is painted on wood with acrylic and gold leaf. The visual presentation of the painting is broken up into 8 parts which is just as much part of the symbolic language of the painting as the rich colour, the gold leaf for the Heavenly realm the unborn child in baptismal shawl surrounded by a dove symbolizing the soul, the cool blue green waters of Purgatory and the swooshing circular motion of the Angel on its way from earth to eternity. The early church Baptisteries had 8 sides, 6 sides for creation 7 for the day of rest and 8 for the new creation, the Resurrection day.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In contemporary society, even when there is an holistic approach to life, with mind body and soul considered, it seems to go from birth through middle age to-wards old age and stops at the blood pressure pills. The greatest and most exciting journey of all is blanked out. So here is Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman's vision of that journey to-wards the super-sensuous where, "this gaudy world has grown pale before the beauty of God's grace," enhanced by Elgar's choral piece and the painted image.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
The bottom left of the painting shows an old man on his deathbed surrounded by his friends and a priest, the choral piece is part where the priest sings “Go forth upon thy journey, Christian soul!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/37261657?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
The second part further up the left of the painting shows the Angel holding the old man’s soul firmly in its hand. the soul is symbolised by an unborn child in a baptismal garment within the shape of a dove. Off they go, the Guardian Angel with its soul of the old man. The choral piece at this point is the Angel singing of the old man’s soul, “And saved is he”.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/37306703?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
At the top left of the painting can be seen the Angel with its charge flying and swooshing round to-wards the heavenly realm and passing a howling mob of demons who are however powerless to hurt them.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
The choral part here is characterised by the distinctive and terrible sound of the mocking “Ha! Ha!” of the demons.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/47922285" style="text-align: center;" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
The Angel with the soul of the old man carries on past the demons and moves nearer to the presence of the Judge. As they draw closer choirs of angels are heard around the throne singing “Praise to the Holiest in the height.” These angels can be seen at the very top and centre of the painting. The choral part at this point starts with the soul proclaiming. “I have no fear”, and goes onto the choir of angels singing “Praise to the Holiest in the height.”</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/48405138" style="text-align: center;" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
Finally as they get nearer still to the Throne the soul says “I go before my Judge” and darts from his Guardian Angel’s hold and flies before the Throne. There follows a dramatic and awful moment as the soul is left dazed and shrivelled at the foot of the Throne as it realises its need for purification before it can see God face to face. At the bottom middle of the painting lie the soul and dove. The choral piece at this point echoes this terrible and awful moment.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/47924728" style="text-align: center;" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
The soul then sings “Take me away,” and returns to his Guardian Angel and up they go and round to-wards Purgatory. Here the choral piece sings “Take me away”.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/47924727" style="text-align: center;" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
As the Angel gently places the soul of the old man in the cooling waters of Purgatory he can hear the hopeful singing of the souls in Purgatory.</span></div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/48404817" style="text-align: center;" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
As the Angels leaves his charge in Purgatory it sings “Farewell, but not forever! Brother dear,” and the painting shows the soul within the dove in Purgatory preparing to be born into the Eternity of Heaven.
